Make sure that you call the hiring coordinator and ask him/her for the names of the interviewers a day or two before your callback interview. Then go to the firm’s website and research your interviewers. I always loved surprising the interviewers when I was going through my callback interviews by asking them a specific question on the case they had worked on. For example, in my Jones Day interview, I researched the interviewers in advance and saw that one of the interviewers had recently won a big judgment in an IP case. During the interview, I asked the interviewer about this case and he seemed very impressed with this question. |

On your callback lunch/dinner, order something that is not too messy and difficult to eat. My rule was to always order salmon. During your lunch/dinner, you’ll be eating and talking at the same time. You don’t want to order some dish (e.g. lobster) that requires a lot of your attention. |

Have about 10 questions prepared before your interview. Make sure that you ask as many questions as possible, especially if the interviewer is a partner. Here are some of the questions that I asked during my callback interviews: 1. Can you give me some examples of the cases that you are currently working on? 2. How is your summer associate program structured? 3. How are summer associates given feedback on their assignments? 4. Do summer associates rotate through different practice areas of are they assigned to one specific department? 5. Where do you see (firm’s name) 10 years from now? (This question works best if the interviewer is a partner. This questions shows that you are looking for a long-term commitment with the firm.) |

I did a callback with a firm that had different practice areas. I kept giving the interviewers the impression that I was only interested in their litigation department. I thought this would be a good move becuase this way they’ll think that I know what I want to do with my life. But this was a bad move. It turned out that firms prefer students who show flexibility. Oh well, I made the mistake and ya should learn from it. |
